Gioja Sekundarschule in Mgbele

INFORMATION ABOUT GIOJA SECONDARY SCHOOL AND ITS ENVIRONMENT

Gioja Secondary School is situated in Mgbele Oguta in the local government district of Imo State in Eastern Nigeria.

The community of Mgbele – where the school is located – incorporates more than ten other villages. The school will educate children from all these areas. Although these villages are close by, they are all autonomous communities with their own village heads. They include: Izombe, Ejemekwuru, Nkwesi, Nnebukwu, Orsu obodo, Kalabari beach, Ezi orsu, Abiaziem, Awa, Akabour and Ukwuoji.

Despite being only approximately 3-4 kilometres apart, some of these villages (Ejemekwuru, Izombe, Eziorsu, Kalabari beach, Orsu obodo, Akabour and Ukwuoji) are over 10 kilometres away from the school. This means the students cannot walk there and more than one bus is required to transport them.

These areas only have one government secondary school and one mission secondary school. Unfortunately, the government school is in a state of disrepair due to a lack of care by the government. The government is neglecting to pay the teachers their salaries, so they do not teach, and there are even occasional workers’ strikes.

The mission school is owned by the Catholic Church and managed by the parish priest. According to some parents, the student numbers are low because the teachers do not teach in the way they should. As a result, many have decided to move their children to Gioja Secondary School.

We have three classrooms already occupied by students: JSS (Junior Secondary School) 1, 2 & 3. JSS 1 has 20 students, JSS 2 has 22 students and JSS 3 has 14 students. Overall, there are 56 students attending classes.

An average-sized classroom in Nigeria can fit 30-45 students – minimum 30, maximum 45. As the school has yet to move to its permanent site, students are currently using part of the primary school classroom, which is smaller than the secondary school.

The secondary school has 16 classrooms, which are situated on the first and second floors. Other areas include offices, stores, a laboratory and a hall. Therefore, the school should be able to accommodate 720-1,000 students in the future.

The closest secondary school to the local area is the government school, which is located 10 kilometres away from Gioja. Parents are reluctant to send their children to government or public schools anymore due to their low standard of teaching.

I hope I have covered everything you need to know. Please let me know if there are any more questions.
